Victorian Shell Picture
A chosen few
were fortunate enough to receive one of these "Sailor's Valentines" from
Queen Victoria, who loved to give them as tokens of her esteem.
Traditionally brought on merchant ships to England from Barbados, these
intricate shell pictures have become highly prized by collectors. This
replica of a Victorian Shell Picture is based on original examples found
throughout the world. Most were well-balanced compositions such as
this replica, but Queen Victoria commissioned some shell pictures as
portraits, including one of her favorite pug dog, "King Dick", whose shell
portrait still hangs in Buckingham Palace. This more traditional example
brings a natural color palette to any setting, beautiful symmetry and
fascinating natural shells to observe. Ideal gift for a history
enthusiast or anyone who appreciates the natural world. Attractive
gift box included.
