Phrenology Head
Phrenology was considered sound science during
Victorian times and charts and models such as these were used to explain and
understand the science. The brain was considered to be an "organ of
the mind" with character traits and health concerns identified and
associated with specific parts of the brain. American brothers Lorenzo
and Orson Fowler were leading phrenologists of their time and ran the
publishing house Fowlers & Wells in New York City, focusing on
publications dealing with phrenology.
Lorenzo spent much of his time studying in London, where he established L.
N. Fowler & Co., most famous for the phrenology head made of china that they
produced. This is an exact replica of the L. N. Fowler & Co. model,
made of Staffordshire china, complete with a crackled finish that adds to
the authentic look and feel.
Makes a great conversation piece. An ideal gift for anyone interested
in medical history.
