Intricate
hand-made copy of a Renaissance illustration from the Mira Calligraphiae
Monumenta. An unusual collaboration between Flemish painter and
engraver Joris Hoefnagel, and Croatian calligrapher Georg Bocskay, once
secretary to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I in Vienna during the
mid-1500's. Unusual in that the collaboration occurred about 15 years after
Bocksday's death. The grandson of Ferdinand I became Emperor Rudolph
II, establishing the Bohemian court and then moving it to Prague.
In Prague, Hoefnagle was commissioned to illuminate the Model Book of
Calligraphy that had been compiled by Bocksay in 1561-62. The
resulting work, Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta is considered to be a
masterpiece of illuminated calligraphy. Borrowing from techniques and
traditions of the16th century artists, this illustration is entirely
hand-sketched and hand-painted. Only archive quality, acid-free paper is used
so that the hand applied colors will remain vibrant throughout time. Every stroke is applied
by hand so that no two are identical. A colorful and decorative accent
that will enhance any space. Framed in a delicately finished mahogany frame and mounted to museum standards, the print is also available unframed.
